It’s obviously a bit early to make a first assessment of this Orange Africa Cup of Nations 2013, but one can nevertheless observe that the gap between teams is very small, with five draws in the first six matches!
For their opening game of the tournament on Monday, holders Zambia were keen to get off to a good start as they had done last year. But against an Ethiopian side back in the AFCON finals for the first time since 1982, it was all but a walk in the park for Christopher Katongo and his team-mates. The Chipolopolos even came close to going a goal down in the first half, but goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene did well to parry Salahdin’s penalty attempt.
After eventually breaking the deadlock just before half-time, the Zambians were nonetheless unable to keep hold of their lead as Girma equalized for Ethiopia, earning his team a well-deserved draw for their return to the continental competition.
