Following their score draw (2-2) with Congo in their opening game, it was imperative for Ghana to pick up all three points against Mali on Thursday evening. If the Black Stars managed to keep a clean sheet, they had all the trouble in the world breaking the deadlock, and were happy to see Wakaso convert his penalty in the first half to claim their first win of the tournament.

In the day’s other match, Niger defended valiantly against an organised Congo side to claim the first point in their Africa Cup of Nations history; a great performance for Gernot Rohr’s team, who relies on a squad with little experience at the highest level, but the Menas will have to show much more, and be a little but lucky, if they hope to make it through to the quarter-finals of the competition.
