Green Fleet Forum: What future for tomorrow’s cars?

On Thursday September 6, Orange organized the 3rd edition of the Green Fleet Forum at its headquarters in Paris’s 15th arrondissement. A day of conferences to highlight the latest market trends and the Group’s strategies for sustainable development and corporate social responsibility as it relates to cars.

Strategies for sustainable mobility, CO2 reduction, electric and hybrid vehicles, green fleets… car-makers and key players in the global car industry engaged in debate on these challenges and initial solutions. The Orange live blog was designed to highlight the latest innovations in the sector.

Let’s look first at the Near Field Communication (NFC) service that Orange has developed with Opel for Ampera, a hybrid car. The principle is very simple: You can hire a car without queuing up or even if you arrive at the airport at the last minute. You just reserve your car as usual. What’s different is that when you book, you will be sent a virtual key by smartphone equipped with NFC technology. The car you’ve booked has an NFC badge and you need your virtual key to unlock the door. This means that when you get to your destination, you just unlock the car’s door and the glove-box which contains your actual physical key and your vehicle documentation. All you need do now is drive away!

In addition to saving you valuable time, this system is totally secure as the virtual key is sent via your NFC SIM card server so cannot be intercepted.
